More than twice the size of Wales, Lake Victoria is not only the largest lake in Africa and the second largest freshwater lake in the world, it is also the source of the great Nile. The Nile flows northwards, carrying the waters of Nyanza to Egypt and beyond into the Mediterranean. The lake forms a natural boundary between Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The region is famous for its Luo fishermen who fish for colourful cichlids and large Nile Perch in their brightly painted canoes and sailing dhows. Fishing is a major attraction, mainly in search of the Nile Perch. Bird life here is prolific with over 100 species, many of which only exist in western Kenya.
