Heuglins Lodge, Malawi


Heuglins Lodge is a friendly and relaxed guesthouse situated in the quiet northern suburbs of Lilongwe. It has a large well-wooded garden and a 5m swimming pool. The spacious lounge has a well-stocked wildlife library and the lodge offers excellent meals. There are 3 large en suite rooms and 3 rooms with separate facilities. Heuglins is an ideal overnight spot for guests arriving late in Lilongwe or departing early. The lodge is also used as a refreshment stop for those travelling to Lilongwe Airport to depart. Guests are able to freshen up, have a swim or a shower etc. prior to departure.

Location

The lodge is accessible by road and air. Kasane has its own international airport, which is approximately 10 minutes away by road. Road transfers are available to / from Zimbabwe and Zambia, which take approximately 1½ hours.

Highlights

  • A good introduction to the birds of Malawi can be had sitting, drink in hand, in the garden here. There are resident pairs of Scalow’s loerie, Tropical boubou shride, pearl spotted owl and of course Heuglin’s robin. Several sunbirds are also regulars including yellow bellied and scarlet-chested. For very keen birders we can organise early morning trips to the Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary for such species as broadbill, finfoot and red throated twinspot.

  • The lodge has a transfer service into Lilongwe for visits to the bustling old town market and local craft centres.
