Hands-on experiences that balance tourism with nature, the Marataba Conservation Camps allow guests to participate in Marataba's conservation projects while enjoying the vast solitude of the Marataba Contractual National Park.
A year-round camp, Marataba Explorers Camp offers guests incredible views of the Waterberg Mountains and the camp's waterhole, visible from guest tents and the main area alike. Perfect for a family holiday due to the camp's semi-exclusive nature, the camp also offers a swimming pool and fenced garden area, large grassed area, and the outdoor firepit is the perfect place to share the day's stories. Families can also take comfort in the knowledge that Marataba is a malaria-free area, which makes it the perfect stop for children.
Fenced away from wildlife, the 5 canvas tents and one family tent make up the camp, to be used between two groups or families. Each group has its own private vehicle for game drives and activities. All tents offer an en-suite with an indoor shower, and an outdoor lounge is available for guests to relax after a long day of conservation efforts.
Explorers Camp's two vehicles allow guests flexible and private game drives around Marataba, but guests can also take part in the 'wild walking' experience. The walks explore gorges, rivers and mountain, with opportunities for swimming and picnics, exploration of cultural sites and more conservation experiences. Guests can also 'mix and match' their activities, allowing guests to tailor their experience to their own interests and wants.
There are daily flights from Lanseria International Airport to Marakele National Park (1 hour), and 3 flights a week from the Sabi Sands (1 hours 30 mins). There is an airstrip directly adjacent the park which is a 10-minute drive from Explorers Camp.
Guests can also arrive by road from Johannesburg's O.R Tambo International Airport, which takes 3 hours 30 minutes on good roads.
Land and water safari experiences (game drives and boat excursions), hiking and walking safaris, wildlife interventions, predator management, elephant management, camera trap analysis, ecology experiences, area integrity & protection, community outreach, mindfulness, rhino ear notch ID and a 3-day rhino conservation safari (additional charges apply).
