Delivering plenty of character, Durban is a bustling cosmopolitan beachfront city. As one of South Africa's busiest ports you can experience the working harbour or dive into the pulsating cultural mash-up of East meets West. Home to one of the largest Indian communities outside of Asia, enjoy the city's contrast of temples and bazaars standing alongside colonial architecture. While the city excels itself in a wide variety of culinary delights Indian food is by far its speciality, from fast-food specials like bunny chow to sophisticated dining in the Berea area of the city, Durban's cuisine is perhaps most influenced by Indian culture.
Durban is also known for its beachfront; a popular tourist hub, populated by a buzzing throng of restaurants and shops which can subtract somewhat from the golden sands and Indian Ocean waters. For a quieter beach break, that is still close to the city, Durban's surrounds are ideal. The likes of Umhlanga Rocks is an excellent choice, with a pretty palm fringed coastline and excellent shopping. Holidays to Durban are also perfect for exploring the KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields and the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park.
