Once a quiet fishing village is now the centre of South Africa's celebrated Whale Route and in 2019 Hermanus and its surrounding villages were named by UNESCO as a Creative City of Gastronomy. Expect cosy seaside charm from this coastal offering, with whale sightings second to none and spectacular cuisine. The magnificent creatures for which the town is famous are best seen in Hermanus from July to October. While a wide variety of whale species pass through the area your main sightings are most likely to be the impressive Southern right whales.
The town is perfect for leisurely watching the whales, with Walker Bay a popular haunt for females to travel inshore to calve. Cliff-top paths are the gateway to these kind of sightings although for the more adventurous there's the chance to get up close to these colossal creatures. Boat trips take guests out to sea for a closer look in the thick of the action. While whale watching is very much its main drawn, holidays to Hermanus also offer a range of shops, luxury accommodation and reputedly one of the best wine shops in South Africa: the Wine Village.
