South Africa's administrative capital, conservative Pretoria is defined by pretty avenues, lined by distinctive purple jacarandas, and elegant government buildings. Set only 50km north of its sister city Johannesburg, Pretoria is much less of an urban sprawl; expect sophisticated architecture adorning striking museums and administrative buildings. One of the best places to start exploring is Church Street; the city's central hub.
The Union Buildings are on most people's sightseeing list: an impressive sight, South Africa's majestic seat of office is a sprawling complex with green lawns and imposing stature. Art buffs will enjoy time spent in the Pretoria Art Museum, while the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens and Freedom Park both provide a pleasant escape from city life. With holidays to Pretoria the hotels encountered in the city are similar in nature to those found in Johannesburg: often large and luxurious with excellent facilities and service - ideal for stop-overs or a comfortable base from which to explore.
