Perhaps it was due to Mahali Mzuri being so exceptional, but Breezes felt significantly less refined and less well-run. Of course, it will have been far cheaper, but it lacked the 'we'll-do-anything-to-help-you' attitude that Mahali Mzuri had. For example, we arrived very late with no luggage from Nairobi, as it had been delayed. The staff gave the usual welcome, but were fairly nonchalant about the luggage; this seemed to happen quite regularly. Instead of providing a toothbrush and toothpaste, for example, we were told there was a gift shop and we should go in the morning. We had to push for their assistance in the morning with chasing the bags, and it all seemed a bit laid back. Having said that, when the manager, Jordi, arrived the next day, he was extremely helpful and made amends. In addition to the luggage problem, there had been a problem with our room when we arrived (a smell of sewerage) and, to be fair to Breezes, we had been upgraded to a sea front suite in view of this. Not only that, but Jordi gave us a free sailing lesson and said he had a surprise for us (which I will come onto). The grounds are beautiful and the food is good. One final comment relates to the drinks and the general control the resort has. The drinks, even water and basic soft drinks, are extremely expensive and we felt that this was unfair given that one didn't have access to go to a shop or to a local bar etc. We actually ended up finding a man on the beach to get some drinks for us to put in the minibar, which was far cheaper than anything you could buy in the resort!! In a similar vein, the resort is very keen that everything is run through them, including all transfers, taxis and activities. Cash cannot be taken out so everything is put on your bill. While this is convenient for many, we found it felt slightly like you were a prisoner of the resort. In the end we found a fantastic guide on the beach who took us on several private tours for far less money. The resort does not approve of using the 'beach boys' Coming to the surprise, Jordi had arranged for us to spend our last night at Zawadi - which only opened in August. It was a lovely gesture from Breezes, and Zawadi was absolutely stunning. We could not fault it and it had a similar feel and quality to Mahali Mzuri, with only 6 private villas. The accommodation was exceptional, as was the general resort, food and the staff - over 5 stars without doubt! I appreciate that Zawadi would have been far more expensive than Breezes, but it is certainly a more natural fit following a visit to Mahali Mzuri. In short, we had a lovely time in Zanzibar and Breezes is a great place (esepcially considering the value), but it just needs a slight sharpening and more flexibility to make it perfect :-)

Great end to our safari holiday on an allinclusive island resort - the rooms were smaller than our tents but it was facing the beach and we had the best sun rise to photograph. So relaxing - wish we could have stayed one extra night.
