Prepare to experience an outstanding diversity of wildlife, including the legendary Big 5. They are joined by almost 150 mammals, with sightings of wild dog, cheetah, Burchell's zebra, and giraffe to watch out for. Birding is nothing short of phenomenal, as an amazing 507 species have been recorded, ranging from the fabled Pel's fishing owl to the colourful lilac-breasted roller.

The Kruger is open to the public and you can self-drive the National Park if you wish, however, the private game reserves and concessions found within the Park are removed from the tourist bustle; offering superb guiding, luxury accommodation and even better game viewing.

At the extreme north of the Kruger you'll find the Pafuri triangle, also known as the Makuleke area. Embark on game drives and walking safaris through the 24,000 hectare concession and uncover the secrets of Thulamel - a 500-year-old ancient civilization. Travelling south will take you to the Thornybush Game Reserve and the adjacent Timbavati Private Nature Reserve. Thornybush is a great family friendly option, and provides not only exclusive lodges but engaging Big 5 safaris as well. Timbavati offers an equally invigorating experience, although is far larger than its counterpart and is famous for its white lions.

Head further south and you'll encounter the Kruger's premier game viewing area, the Sabi Sands Game Reserve. This is one of the best places in the world to see lion and especially leopard. Wildlife sightings are unparalleled, with guides driving off-road; something not possible in the National Park. Arguably the best private game reserve in South Africa, the Sabi Sands is formed by various smaller concessions, ranging from lavish Singita, to exclusive Londolozi and luxurious Lion Sands; all of which deliver outstanding levels of guiding and only the best accommodation.

The Sabi Sands is also celebrated for its close proximity to the Mpumalanga International Airport and Hazyview, which are not only the perfect gateway to the Kruger but the magnificent Kruger Escarpment as well. The Escarpment offers South Africa's most spectacular views, with the stunning Blyde River Canyon the focal point. Known as the Panorama Route the area is full of engaging attractions from the restored gold-mining town of Pilgrim's Rest to waterfall abseiling and caving by candlelight at Sabie. The views from Blyde River Canyon, however, are simply jaw-dropping and completely steal the show. Drive along the canyon rim, admire panoramic vistas from God's Window and the Three Rondavels or enjoy river rafting in the mighty gorge below.
